In Wonderland:
The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and The United States

On Monday,Febraury 27th 2012, I met up with German Humanitarian, Maike Both.

With each purchase , $3 are donated to one of the 3 charities listed on her website,

The National Resources Defense Council is the nation's most effective environmental action group, combining the grassroots power of 1.3 million members and online activists with the courtroom clout and expertise of more than 350 lawyers, scientists and other professionals. Their goal is to restore the integrity of the elements that sustain life - air, land and water - and to defend endangered natural places.

Families Forward is a non-profit agency dedicated to helping low income and homeless families in need. Two parents working at minimum wage can hardly cover the rent for a two-bedroom apartment, and families are often faced with the decision to pay for shelter, transportation or food. As a community partner, Families Forward is dedicated to helping struggling families not have to choose between feeding their children and paying for rent. Families Forward provides a broad spectrum of services, including: housing, counseling, food, education, case management, life-skills training and rent or utility assistance.

School on Wheels provides one-on-one tutoring for homeless kids who live in shelters, motels, group foster homes and on the streets in Southern California. In addition to weekly tutoring and mentoring, every student receives a backpack, school supplies, and uniforms; students get assistance enrolling in school and with locating and filing school records; and each student receives a toll-free phone number for around-the-clock School on Wheels’ support.

Our date consisted of Art, walking, Veggie Grill, love and light ;).

I met Maike a week ago. We both volunteered to join Ron on a trip to Oceanside to help supply our relatives from Occupy Walk with basic essentials. Maike drove us around town.  In the short time of knowing each other we created a bond by sharing insight of our Universe (mind).

Remedios Varo
Spain, 1908-1963 active Mexico and Spain.

Creacion de las aves ( Creation of the Birds), 1958
Oil on Masonite

As I viewed each painting and photograph I was pulled in to their time. I entered their space; there they each  revealed to me their hopes, their pain, their struggle and their Victory!

I walked out of this exhibit a bit wiser, empowered, motivated and Inspired by their Courage and Creativity.

Females through out history have long battled the supression and Pressures of Religion and Men; Society. All of the images were deep, informative, powerful, Amazing and Unique to say the least!

        Frida Kahlo
Mexico, 1907-1954, active Mexico and United States

Las dos Fridas ( The Two Fridas), 1939
Oil on canvas

The Two Fridas was created for the 1940 international Exhibition of Surrealism in Mexico city. The attire of the two Fridas refers to Khalo's mixed parentage. At one end of the artery is a picture of Diego Rivera; at the other, a surgical clamp. The bleeding may refer to both her broken heart ( she and Rivera divorced) and to the absence of her friend, artist Jacqueline Lamba. The painting has become an icon of questions surrounding women's identity and sexuality.
